Our partnership with National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) is at the heart of DANTE’s work. The company was created by (and is owned by) European NRENs to provide an efficient and cost-effective organisation to procure, implement and operate pan-European research networking on their behalf.
Over time we have adapted this model to other world regions through new research networks, but the principle of a close working relationship with NRENs that serves their needs remains at the forefront of our thinking.
NRENS are DANTE’s principal partners in creating and providing new services for users across the research and education community. Working closely together we shape and develop new services in areas including connectivity, network performance and user access. These services include Bandwidth on Demand, perfSONAR and eduGAIN.
In an interconnected community, it is vital that these services are delivered seamlessly across networks. We collaborate with NREN partners so these services can be rolled out at national level, but interoperable across multiple domains. This ensures research projects spread across different countries have access to the same services in a standardised, understandable manner.
In the global research village, collaboration often extends far beyond a single region, bringing together users in different continents, served by multiple different research networks. DANTE’s networks provide the global connectivity that NRENs and their users need, linking to other regional networks across the world through our close working partnerships and powerful network connections.
Along with DANTE and the European Commission, NRENs are formal partners in GÉANT and the regional networking projects that DANTE manages. Learn more about these projects in DANTE Network Projects.
